ChatGPT Team plan, now Business: price, seats and sharing

Updated 6 min read

ChatGPT Team is now called ChatGPT Business. OpenAI renamed it on 29 August 2025, and existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces without a migration. A Standard seat costs $25 a user a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually. A Premium seat costs $125 a month, or $100 annually, and has 5x the usage of Standard with no five-hour limit. A workspace needs at least 2 paid seats and can have up to 200.

These figures come from OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business FAQ and Business overview, read on 17 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars and may vary by country. Several pages that rank for “chatgpt team” describe the plan from before the rename; the top organic result, a Reddit thread, quotes $60 a month for two users.

How much does ChatGPT Team (Business) cost?

Seat Billed monthly Billed annually What it includes
Standard $25 a user a month $20 a user a month ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex
Premium $125 a user a month $100 a user a month The same, with 5x Standard’s usage and no five-hour limit

The seat rules, from the same two pages:

  • The minimum is 2 paid seats in any mix: two Standard, two Premium, or one of each.
  • The maximum is 200 paid seats per subscription, for workspaces created from 24 August 2026. Older workspaces keep their previous limit. Above 200, OpenAI points you to ChatGPT Enterprise.
  • Only workspace owners buy, assign or change seat types. Admins manage invitations and routine member settings.
  • Added seats are charged at once, pro rata. Reductions take effect at the start of the next billing cycle, and removing a member frees their seat without lowering the paid count.
  • Eligible usage beyond a seat’s included limits can draw on workspace credits, if the workspace’s flexible pricing and spend controls allow it.
  • A Business subscription includes no API usage. The API platform is billed separately, and API credits do not transfer.

Since 24 June 2026, new Business workspaces cannot add the legacy Codex seat. Standard and Premium seats both include Codex.

Is ChatGPT Business the same as ChatGPT Team?

Yes. OpenAI says the August 2025 rename did not change the plan’s features, prices or usage limits, and existing contracts stayed in effect. Invoices began to say ChatGPT Business instead of ChatGPT Team. Later changes to prices and seat types, such as the Premium seat, came separately.

How does it compare with Claude’s Team plan?

We read both vendors’ pages within a week of each other. Seat prices line up exactly; the limits differ.

ChatGPT Business Claude Team
Standard seat $25 monthly, $20 annually $25 monthly, $20 annually
Premium seat $125 monthly, $100 annually, 5x usage $125 monthly, $100 annually, 5x usage

What does a ChatGPT Business workspace share, and what stays per person?

Shared in the workspace Stays with each person
Shared projects: their chats, files and instructions Chats outside shared projects
GPTs members choose to share Personal memory and custom instructions
Apps and custom MCP servers an admin publishes Codex history
Billing, seats and workspace credits Each person’s sign-in to apps that need one

Each member has their own chat and Codex history and decides what to share. By default, admins and owners cannot see all of members’ private chats.

Shared work happens in projects. A shared project holds chats, files and instructions that everyone in it can use. On Business you can invite individuals or workspace groups, or share a workspace link that brings members in with chat access. A workspace project takes up to 100 collaborators and 40 files.

A shared project uses project-only memory, and that setting cannot be changed back. It does not see any member’s personal memories, custom instructions or chats from outside the project, and what ChatGPT remembers about each member stays in that member’s own memory.

Codex is included in every seat, and its history is per person too. None of the OpenAI pages we read say that Codex reads a shared project’s files. Codex keeps its instructions in your repositories; our guide to AGENTS.md covers the file it reads.

Can a ChatGPT Business team add its own MCP server?

Yes. Custom MCP servers work on Business, Enterprise and Edu, on ChatGPT on the web, with full MCP support including write actions. On Business, only admins and owners can create and publish them; a member cannot add one for the team. OpenAI’s current steps for an admin:

  1. Open Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Enter a name, and the server’s public HTTPS URL under Connection.
  3. Configure authentication for the server.
  4. Tick the risk warning’s checkbox, select Create as a plugin, and review the tools it found.

OpenAI’s help center says this route does not require turning on Developer Mode first. After testing, an admin publishes the app for the workspace. Custom MCP servers cannot be connected from the mobile apps.

Once a server is live, ChatGPT keeps a frozen snapshot of the server’s tools from when the admin approved it, so new tools do not appear until an admin refreshes the tool list in workspace settings, and a tool whose definition changed in a way that is not backward compatible can make calls fail. OpenAI also says admins are not notified when that happens.

Company knowledge, which answers questions from the workspace’s connected sources, can use custom MCP servers that offer search or fetch, and it only returns what each member is allowed to see.

Give the team’s ChatGPT and coding agents the same wiki

A shared project keeps context inside ChatGPT. If your team also works in Codex, Claude Code or Cursor, those agents need the same notes somewhere they can all read and write.

Dexio is a hosted, open source (AGPL-3.0) wiki that AI agents read and write through MCP. ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and other agents work on the same linked markdown pages, and people see what their agents know as a page graph. On a Business workspace, an admin adds it as a custom MCP server with the URL https://app.dexio.wiki/mcp, and each member signs in to Dexio as themselves. Dexio’s own ChatGPT steps, on its connect page, follow the same Plugins route.

Coding agents set themselves up from Dexio’s agent instructions; our Codex MCP guide covers Codex. Dexio is free for one person, then $10 (Team) or $20 (Business) a member a month, and agents never count as members.

We have not yet connected Dexio from a ChatGPT Business workspace ourselves, so the admin steps above come from OpenAI’s help center.

If your team only works in ChatGPT and the shared context is a handful of files, a shared project does the job at no extra cost. A wiki is worth adding when Codex and your other agents need the same pages as chat, and you want to read and correct what they wrote.

FAQ

What is the minimum number of users on ChatGPT Team?

Two paid seats. They can be two Standard, two Premium, or one of each.

Can one person buy ChatGPT Business?

Not with one seat. A workspace needs at least 2 paid seats, so one person pays for two.

Can admins read members’ chats?

Not all of them, by default. Each member has their own chat history and chooses what to share, and chats in a shared project are visible to its members.

Does OpenAI train on ChatGPT Business data?

OpenAI says it does not train on Business workspace data. The plan follows its Business Terms and Enterprise Privacy commitments.

Can we export our data when leaving a workspace?

OpenAI says self-service data export is not available in Business workspaces. Cancelling can deactivate the workspace; that does not delete its data, but members lose access until an owner reactivates it.
